The Zvi Meitar Institute for Legal Implications of Emerging Technologies is a new and innovative institute that is situated in the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.The only independent private University in Israel.
The Institute, directed by Dov Greenbaum JD PhD, aims to look at the ethical social and legal implications of new and emerging technologies. While these technologies broadly include both hitech and biotech innovations, the Institute is principally focused on issues related to disruptive technologies.
The Institute has four primary focuses:
Examining the legal, ethical and social implications of four particular areas of innovation: Human Biology; Globalization; Technology; and Sustainability. As such, while we intend to study and research varied areas and topics, this year (2014-15) we particularly focus on exoskeletons (Human Biology); Israeli immigration policy and local technological development (Globalization); 3D additive printing (Disruptive Technology) and Autonomous vehicles (Sustainable Technology).
The Institute is driven to provide academic and lay‐accessible commentary and research on new and innovative technologies.
To this end, the Institute has four faces, each specifically tasked to address its goals:
a) The policy face is aimed at providing deliverables to government, NGOs, and corporations;
b) A public face looks towards educating and informing the public on issues relating to new and innovative technologies both through publishing in the lay literature, newspaper opinion pages, and via various forms of social media.
c) The pedagogical face of the Institute endeavors to engage students through individual and large‐scale projects for student researchers who join. The Institute will also host regular events featuring local and international experts on areas of interest to the institute.
d) The Institute’s vibrant academic face publishes and presents scholarly papers, books and textbooks. We are developing collaborations with other similar‐minded institutions locally and globally on varied issues within our mandate.
In summary, the Institute is focused on the promotion of innovation and technology.
We aim to provide background, and direction regarding new and emerging technologies such that policy, laws, regulations and the like are designed to promote rather than hinder new innovation.
At the same time, we appreciate the need for responsible and sensible use of technology within society in light of the social, ethical, legal, and economic implications.
